Oh wow. I really, really like this way of doing things. In traditional media, I completely avoid outlines and shade very choppily, like in your original shading steps before gradually blending the areas. However, I could not figure out how to transition that style into photoshop and tablet are, and use a basic sketch layer at the start seems to be a good beginning point. Thank you for the tip!
